Established in 2003, KIPP Dallas-Fort Worth is a region of the Knowledge is Power Program (KIPP), which is a national network of free, open-enrollment, college preparatory, public charter schools with a track record of preparing students in underserved communities for success in college and in life.
THE NEED for the project
The KIPP Truth Elementary (KTE) Principal needed help selecting and prioritizing the most impactful big rocks of culture and instruction for the 2016-2017 school year.

- Coaching on big rock implementation performed at monthly intervals
why was this project chosen?
Coaching sessions delivered at regular intervals targeting specific KTE big rocks helps the principal stay on track for implementation, provides her data on progress to implementation, and provides her with the necessary skills and tools to upgrade any improvements necessary.
PROCESS for how the project was implemented
Collaborative conversations occurred with the KIPP Truth Elementary (KTE) Principal to determine the greatest area of need
KTE big rock selection document created which outlines the 2016-2017 KTE big rocks, action times, persons responsible and metrics for success
Coaching on big rock implementation performed at monthly intervals using the BRES Effective Coaching Framework, ending each session with clear action steps, persons responsible and a timeline for implementation
CLIENT BENEFIT – where are they now?
- 62% increase on Northwest Evaluation Association Measures of Academic Progress (NWEA MAP) kindergarten and first grade reading scores from 2016 to 2017.
- 24% increase on Northwest Evaluation Association Measures of Academic Progress (NWEA MAP) kindergarten and first grade math scores from 2016 to 2017.
- The KTE principal stayed focused implementing the school’s big rocks, was aligned to KIPP DFW’s district priorities, and increased student achievement results from year one to year two.
